Sheikh Hasina Resigns as Bangladesh Prime Minister Amid Military Takeover and Protests
In a dramatic turn of events, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and fled the country amid widespread protests and a military takeover. An “interim government” is now taking shape, reportedly advised by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The Bangladesh President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, approved the temporary administration late Monday.
According to the Bangladeshi publication Prothom Alo, Sheikh Hasina was initially reluctant to resign, hoping to quell the protests through force. However, security chiefs warned that the situation could not be controlled with further crackdown measures.
The ousted leader arrived in India and remains in the country as discussions about her future course of action continue. Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting to address the implications of the Hasina government’s fall and the subsequent military takeover. Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to monitoring the situation closely and maintaining communication with the Bangladeshi Army to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and minorities in Bangladesh.
The Indian government is also considering its diplomatic strategy and the potential impact on security and economic relations with Bangladesh as the new interim administration takes shape.
