Udhampur witnesses a 58% voter turnout by 3 pm as Jammu and Kashmir exercises its franchise for the first time post the repeal of Article 370
The Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir has garnered attention during the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. By 3 pm on Friday, the constituency had witnessed an impressive voter turnout of nearly 58%. By 1 pm, approximately 43% of the total electorate had already cast their votes. This election holds significance as it marks the first time Jammu and Kashmir is going to the polls since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Voting began promptly at 7 am across the constituency, with 2,637 strategically positioned polling stations. The contest for the Udhampur seat involves 12 candidates, including Union Minister Jitendra Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress stalwart Choudhary Lal Singh. Singh aims to secure a third consecutive term and maintain BJP’s dominance over the Udhampur seat. Despite challenging weather conditions, early voters displayed their dedication, and over 11,000 polling personnel have been deployed to ensure a smooth electoral process. The constituency comprises a significant number of potential first-time voters and experienced participants, contributing to the diverse electoral landscape.
